Edwin Van der Sar – 7
Solid game from the veteran. Not called into action as much as Newcastle would have liked. A comfortable save from a Carroll shot in the first half pretty much summed up his day’s work.
Patrice Evra (off 87′) – 7.5
Excellent going forward down the left flank as he exploited the space afforded to him everytime Nani cut infield.
Nemanja Vidic – 7
Newcastle striker Carroll is by no means one of the Premiership’s most feared strikers but the 6ft 4in forward provided a good opening test for Vidic which the Serbian passed nine times out of ten occasions – while also managing to knock the wind out of Nolan when the pair clashed heads going for a high ball.
John O’Shea – 7
A typical United performance from O’Shea who did what was neccessary defensively without making too many mistakes while bombing forward to support the attack on many occasions.
Jonny Evans – 7
Newcastle, who to their credit did not line up ultra defensively, only had Nolan upfront to support Carroll which allowed Evans to help United in attack when his defensive presence was not needed.
Nani (off 71′) – 6.5
The Portuguese winger was an attacking threat but his final ball let United down on ocassions, especially when United were trying to break down Newcastle at 0-0.
Paul Scholes – 7.5
Had another man-of-the-match performance. Newcastle – Nolan and Carroll – closed him down all match, but he still managed to provided the killer ball to Berbatov for United’s opener as well as setting up Giggs for the third. Typically, he picked up a booking for a studs-up challenge on Nolan in the second half.
Darren Fletcher – 8
Reliable midfield play, accurate passing and a goalscorer tonight. Fletcher was invariably involved in United’s best passing moves along with Scholes.
Antonio Valencia – 7.5
Less effective tonight than against Chelsea in the FA Community Shield. Most of United’s wing play came from the left but it was Valencia who nicked the ball off Gutiérrez in the lead up to United’s first goal.
Dimitar Berbatov- 8
Berbatov was on show against Newcastle. He showed great touches and his link up play caused Newcastle problems all match. He took his goal well but was also guilty of missing a second half one-on-one chance against Newcastle keeper Harper.
Wayne Rooney (off 62′) – 7
Didn’t look sharp on the ball after 30 minutes of play but his movement gave Newcastle defenders a lot to think about.
Javier Hernandez (on 62′) – 7
Looks Premiership quality already but will be dissapointed not to have continued on in with his rich goal scoring form.
Ryan Giggs (on 71′) – 7
His 21st season in top flight football and he’s scored in everyone of them. Took his goal well.
Rafeal Da Silva (on 87′) – 6
No time to make any impact.
